Veteran of the assault engineer-sapper brigade Andrey Cherkashin recalls his first fight: “I hardly felt the weight of the armor, my legs carried me in the heat of the attack. I don’t remember how we burst into the German trench. Hand-to-hand combat began, shots were fired at point-blank range… I will never forget the face of the German mp40 gunner. Pressing his back against the earthen traverse, he fired at me from a dueling distance… Three strong pushes to the chest – three hits to the armor. I barely stayed on my feet, but I stayed. The machine gunner saw that his bullets were bouncing off me like peas. Behind the glasses were eyes mad with horror. I didn’t shoot at him, I jumped over and – forward!”

SN 42 Body armor: Replica of Individual protective equipment, like a cuirass, made of 2 mm steel and weighs 3.5 kg. It was used in the Great Patriotic War.

They were mainly used by the engineering assault brigades of the Soviet Army. It withstood pistol and machine gun bullets and small fragments. There are cases of 9 mm bullets from MP 40 being fired point-blank, without causing damage to the soldier. It proved itself well in urban combat.
